The Different Methods of Cannabis Hash Production: A Detailed Guide for Home Use

Dr. Ansay

Hashish, also known as hash, is a popular cannabis product made from the resin glands (trichomes) of the cannabis plant. There are several different methods for making hash, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here, I'll show you the most common methods and provide detailed instructions on how to make hash at home.

1. Dry Sifting

Dry sifting is one of the simplest and oldest methods of making hashish.

What you need:
  • Cannabis flowers or trim
  • Fine sieves (preferably different sieve thicknesses, e.g. 120 and 160 micrometers)
  • A clean, smooth surface
  • A card or blade for collecting kief
Here's how:
  1. Preparation : Freeze your cannabis flowers or trim for a few hours. This makes the trichomes more brittle and easier to sift.
  2. Sieving : Place the frozen material on the finer sieve. Shake gently so the trichomes fall through. Repeat this process with the coarser sieve to increase the quality.
  3. Collecting : Collect the kief (the sifted trichomes) from the smooth surface with a card or blade.
  4. Pressing : The collected kief can now be pressed into hash. You can do this with a special kief press or simply by hand by placing it between wax paper and applying pressure.

2. Ice hash (Ice-O-Lator/ Bubble Hash)

Ice hash, also known as bubble hash, is made by using ice water to separate the trichomes from the plant.

What you need:
  • Cannabis flowers or trim
  • Bucket
  • Ice
  • Water
  • Bubble Bags (various sieve thicknesses)
  • Stirring tool (wooden spoon or hand mixer)
  • Drying sieve or kitchen paper
Here's how:
  1. Preparation : Place your bubble bags in the bucket, starting with the finest sieve.
  2. Ice Water Mix : Fill the bucket with cold water and add plenty of ice. Add the cannabis material to the bucket as well.
  3. Stir : Stir the mixture vigorously for about 15-20 minutes. This helps loosen the trichomes from the plant material.
  4. Strain : Lift the bubble bags out of the bucket one at a time and let the water drain. The trichomes remain in the strainers.
  5. Drying : Collect the hashish from the sieves and let it dry on a drying sieve or kitchen paper.

3. Handrub Hashish (Charas)

Charas is a traditional method from India in which fresh cannabis flowers are rubbed by hand to collect the trichomes.

What you need:
  • Fresh cannabis flowers
Here's how:
  1. Harvesting : Harvest the fresh cannabis flowers.
  2. Rubbing : Take a small amount of the flowers in your palm and gently rub them between your hands. This should be done slowly and evenly.
  3. Collecting : The resin will accumulate on your hands. After a while, you can scrape off the sticky substance and form it into small balls or sticks.

4. CO₂ extraction

CO₂ extraction is a professional method and less suitable for home use as it requires special equipment.

What you need:
  • CO₂ extraction device
  • Cannabis flowers or trim
Here's how:
  1. Preparation : The cannabis is loaded into the extraction chamber of the device.
  2. Extraction : The device uses supercritical CO₂ (high pressure and low temperature) to extract the trichomes.
  3. Collecting : The resulting hashish is highly pure and can be used directly or further processed.

Conclusion

Making hash at home can be both easy and rewarding. Whether you choose traditional dry sifting, ice hash, or hand rubbing, you'll be able to extract high-quality hash from your cannabis plants. Experiment with the different methods and find out which one works best for you. Always remember to ensure clean and safe working conditions and comply with the legal regulations in your country. Happy hash making!
