How to Save Your Plants from Nutrient Burn
When growing your three legal plants under the CanG, you naturally want to get the most out of them. But be careful: more is not always better! Over-fertilization is one of the most common mistakes in home growing. It stresses your plants, inhibits flavor, and in the worst case, can ruin the entire harvest. We'll show you how to recognize nutrient burn and react correctly immediately.
What is Over-fertilization and How Does It Occur?
Over-fertilization occurs when the concentration of minerals (especially nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) in the substrate is so high that the plant can no longer process them. The consequences are toxic. Common causes include:
- Excessive dosage (blindly trusting fertilization schedules without observation).
- Combining different boosters that overlap.
- Lack of flushing, leading to salt buildup in the pot.
Symptoms: How Do You Recognize Over-fertilization?
Your plants communicate with you. Pay attention to these warning signs:
- 🔥 Burnt Leaf Tips: The tips turn yellow or brown and curl upwards.
- 🌲 Claw-like Leaves: The leaves bend downwards (often a sign of too much nitrogen).
- 🌑 Dark Green Color: The leaves appear almost bluish-dark green and unnaturally shiny.
- 🧂 Salt Crust: White deposits on the soil surface.
First Aid: What to Do When It's Burning?
If you see signs of nutrient burn, every hour counts. Here's how to proceed:
- Flush the Substrate: Water your soil with 3 times the pot volume of clear, pH-neutral water. This will flush out excess salts.
- Check EC Value: Measure the runoff (the draining water). If the value is significantly higher than the irrigation water, flushing must continue.
- Fertilization Break: Give the plant at least 3-7 days to recover before fertilizing again (with a reduced dose).
- Care: Only remove completely dead leaves. Slightly burnt tips can remain as long as new growth looks healthy.
How to Prevent Over-fertilization in the Future
Prevention is the key to massive buds and pure flavor:
- Use organic fertilizers (like BioBizz), as these have buffer capacities and less often lead to sudden over-fertilization.
- Adhere to the "less is more" rule: Often start with 50% of the manufacturer's recommendation.
- Regularly monitor the pH value, as an incorrect pH value can block nutrients (lockout), which often looks like a deficiency but is actually over-fertilization in the soil.
