The Perfect Base for Your Edibles
You've successfully harvested your plants and now want to use their full potential in the kitchen? Cannabis butter (cannabutter) is the absolute classic. It's the ideal base for brownies, cookies, or savory dishes. We'll show you how to turn your legal flowers into a potent and delicious extract.
The Most Important Step: Decarboxylation
Before you start cooking, you need to decarboxylate your cannabis. Why? Raw cannabis contains THCA, which is not psychoactive. Only through heat is it converted into the effective THC. Without this step, your edibles will have little to no effect!
What You Need for Your Cannabutter
Ingredients
- 10 g cannabis flowers (or trim from your 3 legal plants)
- 250 g butter (high-quality pasture butter is best)
- 500 ml water
Utensils
- Baking sheet & parchment paper
- Pot for the double boiler
- Heat-resistant glass jar (e.g., canning jar)
- Fine sieve or cheesecloth
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Decarboxylate (Activation)
Preheat the oven to 110–115 °C (230-240 °F). Coarsely grind the flowers (do not turn into powder!) and spread them on the baking sheet. Bake for 30–45 minutes. The cannabis should look slightly brownish and smell nutty afterwards.
Step 2: The Double Boiler Extract
Bring water in a pot to a simmer. Place the butter in the glass jar and put it in the double boiler. Once the butter is liquid, stir in the activated cannabis.
Step 3: Time and Patience (The Simmer)
Let the mixture simmer over low heat (approx. 70–90 °C / 160-195 °F) for 2 to 3 hours. Stir occasionally. Make sure the butter never boils, as temperatures above 100 °C (212 °F) can destroy THC!
Step 4: Filter and Chill
Pour the warm butter through the cheesecloth into a container. Gently squeeze out the plant material. Let the butter solidify in the refrigerator. The water will settle at the bottom – you can simply lift off the solid butter slab from the top and discard the water.
Important Dosage Tip:
Homemade cannabutter can be extremely potent! First, test a small amount (e.g., half a teaspoon on bread) and wait at least 90 minutes before consuming more.
