Die Geschichte von Cannabis

The History of Cannabis

From Remedy to Legalization

Cannabis is a plant with a rich and complex history spanning thousands of years. In Germany, we have turned a new page with the new Cannabis Act (CanG). But to appreciate today's freedom to cultivate three plants for personal use, it's worth looking back at the fascinating journey of this useful plant.

Antiquity and the Middle Ages: The Era of the Useful Plant

The earliest evidence of cannabis use is found in China over 4,000 years ago. In ancient times, cannabis was valued in many advanced civilizations:

  • Egypt, Greece & Rome: Here, cannabis was primarily used as a potent medicinal plant.
  • Medieval Europe: Hemp fibers were the basis for clothing, ropes, and ship sails. Without hemp, seafaring would have been almost unimaginable.

Modern Times and the Beginning of Prohibition

In the 19th century, cannabis experienced a heyday in Europe and North America – both in medicine and as a recreational drug. In pharmacies, cannabis extract was a common remedy for pain. But in the 1920s and 1930s, the tide turned.

Why was cannabis banned?

The ban in the USA and later worldwide was often driven by economic interests (e.g., the paper and nylon industries) and prejudices. The plant was falsely demonized as a dangerous drug, ushering in decades of prohibition.

The Modern Turn: Science and Benefits

In recent years, science has taken the lead. There is increasing evidence of the medicinal benefits of cannabis. It helps with chronic pain, nausea, and anxiety. These findings led to a global rethinking – and finally to legalization in countries like Germany.

The Future: Legality and Responsibility

The future of cannabis looks bright. The prohibition policy of the past is giving way to regulated distribution and the right to home cultivation. With the CanG, cannabis has arrived in the mainstream of society. It plays an increasingly important role in medicine and as a responsible recreational drug.
